Why do I need disability insurance?

Do you rely on your income to pay your bills and to save for retirement?

If not, then read no further. You are among the lucky few that may not need disability insurance.

For the rest of us, who rely on our incomes to pay our bills, support our family, and save for retirement, disability insurance is an absolute must.

Imagine, after investing countless hours, blood, sweat, (and oftentimes tears) into developing your unique income-producing skillset, to have it unexpectedly taken away from you.

In general, we, as physicians, know better than anybody else that illness and accidents are most often unpredictable.

And the statistics speak for themselves:

- One of 4 individuals above the age of 20 become disabled by retirement age.

- Up to 44.5% of proceduralists report chronic musculoskeletal pain.

- According to the 2017 United States census, approximately 26,000 physicians reported living with a disability. 30% of these physicians were under the age of 45.

- Furthermore, mental health disorders are on the rise. According to the latest Medscape physician survey in 2023, 24% of physicians report being depressed. With 53% of physicians reporting burn out, this number is, unfortunately, likely to increase.

- Contrary to popular belief, 90% of disability is the result of disease. Only 10% results from an accident or trauma.

What would you do if you couldn't work as a physician?

How would you pay for a house? How would you afford your daily expenses?

How would you save for retirement? How would you pay off your student loans?

We insure our homes, cars, and some of us even insure consumer products

Therefore, why would we not insure our most important income-producing asset?

That’s where disability insurance comes in.

It provides an income stream in the event you become disabled. So that you can pay your bills and continue to support your family.

And as a general rule, individual disability policies are the most protective. Group policies, while beneficial, have inherent limitations.

As physicians, we have enough to worry about in our lives.

Give yourself some peace of mind in knowing that your most important income producing asset is protected.

Protect your family in the case of the unexpected.
